Event: Men’s Health in Leeds

Across nearly all causes of death, men in Leeds are more likely than women to die at a younger age. Women outliving men is something that you often hear about, but have you spent time thinking about why this is?

Here at Time to Shine we know that men are also at higher risk of social isolation and less likely to reach out for support. If you go to any event organised by an older person’s organisation, you’re likely to see far more many women there than men.

On 25 May, Forum Central invites you to come together and learn more about this important issue. At the event, we will review a 2016 Leeds Beckett Report which examined health disparities based on gender.

Two out of five men over 50 report that they have some kind of disability which affects their lives on a daily basis. Men are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease than women, and the suicide rate for men is five times higher.

If you are alarmed by those statistics, come to the event to hear more about the findings and the causes behind them.

We will also discuss what the third sector’s role is in ensuring men and boys live healthy and fulfilling lives, enjoying longevity and social connections.

It will be a great opportunity to share good practice and identify potential partners who want to work collaboratively.

The event is free; please register here.

You can read the report here. If you’re not able to make it to the event, you can still share your thoughts in the comments section below.
