Volunteer Spotlight: Peter from Walking with Confidence

Time to Shine and all its projects could not function without the help of many dedicated volunteers, all who want to take a step toward ending social isolation in Leeds.

Walking with Confidence, delivered by AgeUK Leeds, helps older people who are uncertain walking on their own, and thus have lost some of their independence and social involvement. Volunteers are matched with participants with a view to rebuild confidence.

Peter recently retired and was looking for a new venture and challenge. He has always enjoyed the company of older people and thought this would be a good role for him. It has turned out to be.

Peter says “I now feel more fulfilled and valued as an individual and can honestly say it’s a pleasure helping clients and seeing an improvement in their everyday life. One lady rang me to confirm that she had been on the bus to the supermarket and that she would repeat this exercise.”

Having received training from AgeUK Leeds, he has brought his new skills and experience to the Holt Park Falls Prevention class which he now volunteers at as well.

Throughout the process, Peter felt very supported by the Walking with Confidence project worker, Adie Nivison. “Adie is an excellent mentor. I’m so pleased she had a word with me when, following my mother’s death, my spirits were low. I’m sure the volunteering has helped me get back to my old self.”

Well done, Peter and Avie. Keep up the good work!
