Archived Project: Walk with Me

Read the Walk with Me Final Report.
Walk with Me is now active through the Choices project.

With an ever increasing aging population, more and more older people are becoming isolated, many not seeing anyone for days at a time. This can have an impact on their health and wellbeing.

Walk With Me project which links volunteer befrienders (18+) with older residents who are isolated to provide support and encouragement to get out of the house. The volunteer and older person will work together to achieve the older person’s goals which may be to walk to friends, to attend groups or visit local shops or attend appointments…. Fancy a stroll?

One participant, an 87-year-old woman, had lost her sense of what she even liked to do, after caring for her husband for 7 years. She was lonely and low in mood after his death, and had become very isolated. A Walk with Me volunteer has helped her get out again, and she now attends weekly neighbourhood social groups. The Care Coordinator who referred her says that she is doing very well and looks ten years younger.

If you are interested in getting involved or know someone who might benefit, please get in touch via the details at the right.
